All institutions face challenges in supporting the development of the research environment at the their institution. External benchmarking of research performance can play an important role in informing the development of the institutional policies, strategies and investment plans for research. Cambridge has established a programme of strategic research reviews (SRRs) to inform our research planning and strategy. The Masterclass will outline the development of the SRR programme at Cambridge and explore the lessons learnt from the delivery of the programme to date. The session will include (a) a facilitated group discussion session to capture reflections from Masterclass participants on the use of research benchmarking at their own instititions, and (b) an open forum discussion on the opportunities to exploit the benchmarking and review processes, for example those used by agencies such as the research councils, more widely in the HE sector.
Key Learning Points:
- tools and techniques to develop and lead research polices and strategies
- the potential role of benchmarking in development of institutional research agendas
