David is the Head of Projects and Partnerships at the Institute for Global Innovation, the University of Birmingham’s mechanism for supporting Challenge Led Multi-Disciplinary Research that addresses Global Challenges. Previously, David led the Social Science Research Support Office at the University of Birmingham, and prior to joining HE he worked in the private sector as a quantitative researcher and consultant. David used to have a range of personal hobbies and interests, but these have been replaced by a four year old son.
The drive for multidisciplinary research (MDR) is of increasing importance across the research landscape, with funding applications, REF and Public Engagement all giving special consideration to research that spans academic disciplines. However, achieving a vibrant multidisciplinary environment is challenging with cultural, structural and logistical barriers that must be surmounted in order to build effective collaborations. …
