Breaking Down Barriers: Engaging with underserved audiences
There is a growing focus within Universities are on the need to increase the diversity and inclusion of their public engagement. This involves establishing new connections, applying for funding and developing appropriate projects, all of which bring their own challenges.
In this interactive session we will explore the challenges of establishing and continuing relationships with underserved audiences. The format will encourage sharing of experiences and development of new ideas, formats and partnerships. We will share our experiences of two projects: ‘Cell Block Science’: a project led by the University of St Andrews working with partners to deliver informal science learning to prisoners and their communities, and ‘Curiosity’: a University of Aberdeen collaboration with a youth group at SHMU community radio to encourage young people, living in the regeneration areas of Aberdeen, to explore science through digital community media.
