Demonstrating and measuring the impact of research beyond academia is an ever increasing requirement of all institutions; driving innovation and the translation of research findings into clinical benefits for patients being a key measure of impact of basic biomedical research. At Imperial, we have created an environment where biomedical innovation can thrive across Imperial College and the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. This environment enables our researchers to translate their findings from the laboratory into improvements for patients and impact on health outcomes. We will detail the unique translation research strategy that has been developed at Imperial with emphasis on the strategic deployment of both funder-devolved and College funding streams, key partnerships & initiatives and the crucial infrastructure of the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) that have allowed a step-change in the culture of translation research at Imperial. We will also describe how our operational functions around clinical research delivery have evolved in the light of national NIHR performance metrics and the shift of emphasis from clinical research governance to feasibility, capacity and capability. Finally, we will examine how the strategic and operational functions dovetail.
